I first met John Paul in the mid-1970s when both of us were studying anthropology/archaeology at the University of Oklahoma. We later shared a tent on the Clayton Project in southeast Oklahoma, our first archaeological project in the summer of 1978. We became good friends and I would visit with him often while I was in grad school at LSU. I always stayed with him during my visits back to Baton Rouge from Tucson, where I've lived since the late 1980s. JP was a great friend of mine and I'll truly miss him and his wit and humor. I used to enjoy watching sporting events with him, especially OU football (although he was a life-long Razorback fan), and playing with his golden retriever, Jolie, and her predecessor, Silky. Even with medical issues he had to deal with in his last few years, he managed to keep his spirits up and seemed like the same JP I knew for so many years. I wish his family well during this period of loss.
