Jack Edward Oliver, 85, of Pine Bluff, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Born October 18, 1924, in Vernon, Texas, he was the son of the late Grady and Verbie Baird Oliver. He was reared and received his early education in Mount Pleasant, Texas, graduating from high school there. After high school, he attended and received a degree from East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas (now Texas A&M - Commerce). Later, he also attended classes at the University of Houston. Furthering his love of learning, when he was in his seventies, he and his wife took three semesters of German at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
In 1949, he began work with the Cotton Belt Railroad. He worked with them in several places in Texas as a Telegrapher, before moving up to Assistant Supervisor in Dallas, then in Shreveport and finally to Pine Bluff. At the time of his retirement in 1983, he was the Assistant to the Superintendent.
Mr. Oliver was a very faithful and active member of Hazel Street Church of Christ, where he served as a Teacher, Deacon and Elder. He was a HAM Radio Operator, and was also a member of the Jefferson County Mounted Patrol for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Mary Helen Oliver, of Pine Bluff; two daughters, Jackie Riley and husband, Mike of Rogers, Arkansas, and Jill Mitchell and husband, Harold of Pine Bluff; two grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and five step-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held, 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Cypress Memorial Gardens, with Mr. Mike Hogan officiating by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM at Robinson's. |
